Jason (16), his 10 year old brother Robert and parents Irina and Sam as well as many members of their family lost their homes due to the recent hurricane. The family lived in a townhouse in Midland Beach, a suburb of Staten Island. Their entire basement and first floor were destroyed. They were able to salvage some of the furniture and summer clothes from the second floor but everything else is gone. They have flood insurance which will only cover the structural damage to their home, but their regular home owners insurance will not cover all of the possessions in the house that were lost due to all of the flooding.
Jason is a part of the theater program and a member of the swim team at Susan Wagner High School on Staten Island. He also enjoys baseball, tennis, computers, and is a two-time US champion in kickboxing. Jason is a very hardworking student, gets good grades and is planning to attend college once he graduates high school. Jason’s younger brother Robert, a student at PS 23, also enjoys baseball, kickboxing, tennis and ballroom dancing.
Irina has been a Burn Unit nurse at Staten Island University Hospital for the past 15 years and also works as an Occupational Therapist specializing with children who have Autism. The basement of the house was where she stored all of the equipment that she used for assisting these children with sensory and development issues. Subsequently, all was destroyed during Hurricane Sandy. Irina has dedicated her life to helping children and making a difference in their lives. She is above all thankful that her family is safe but is very upset that she has not only lost most of her possessions but that she has also lost the equipment she is dependent on to help the children that count on her for help.
Father Sam became unemployed two years ago when the law firm where he was a manager relocated to Long Island. He has not been able to find a job since. He speaks five languages fluently and is an extremely hard worker.
What the Milman’s need most is to get back into their home and start rebuilding their lives. Instead of having to relocate, they can seal off the first floor that was severally damaged and deemed unlivable so they can move back in and inhabit the second and third floors. Your donations can help make that happen so Jason and Robert can continue to thrive in school and their extra curricular activities and Irina can continue helping special needs children.
