Alyssa is a sophomore at Susan E. Wagner High School. Her family’s home was located in the New Dorp Beach area of Staten Island and was completely destroyed by the hurricane. At the height of the hurricane the storm waters filled their basement and rose as high as six feet above the first floor of their home. They lost everything in their basement and first floor. The storm destroyed their hot water heater, furnace, all of the electric in the house, as well as all of their kitchen appliances.
Ann, Alyssa’s mom, is currently on disability and is living on a fixed budget. After paying off all of their bills the family had only enough money to purchase the most basic necessities, such as toothpaste and shampoo. They have been displaced from their home and they have no friends they can stay with. Alyssa and her mom are currently living in a temporary shelter, which is not a sustainable long-term housing solution for the family. FEMA has only given them enough money to cover two months of rent. The family has limited insurance coverage that will only cover the basic structure of the house but will not cover any of the possessions that were destroyed.
Alyssa is a good student who gets good grades, likes music, singing, karate and is enrolled in a work program at Wagner.
Please help us get the family into a suitable apartment while their house is repaired and help them replace everything they lost that insurance won’t cover.
